That Crazy Texas Weather

Earlier today I spent several hours at my son’s baseball tournament.  The day was wonderful, with sunny skies, and good baseball.  There is nothing better than sitting out in the sunshine and taking in a game.  The problem is, at least in North Texas, the weather often doesn’t seem to cooperate!

I spent the last several months, from December through mid-February, cooped up in gymnasiums watching basketball.  I love it, but it amazed me how nice the weather was throughout that time.  We had a few cold days, but not many, and its been that way for the past several years.

And then when basketball ends and baseball starts, the weather changes!  Last Saturday I spent 6 hours in about 40 degree weather, with a North wind howling at about 30 miles per hour!  I came home red faced, and since then my nose has been peeling.  I’m not sure if it was sunburn or windburn, but it was not the most pleasant of experiences. Apathetic Parents

You may call this a recurring theme, but I sure do get frustrated at parents.  The scripture teaches parents to bring their children up in the Lord’s admonition and teaching (Ephesians 6).  One thing that it takes to do this is involvement!

My son Joshua is in his first year of teaching at Castleberry High School.  Castleberry is in an independent school district, and there are a lot of advantages to having your children in a relatively small school district.  However, at Castleberry there has been a real change in demographics in the past decade or so, that has led to a real problem with the lack of parental involvement. Sexism in Sports

Have you ever noticed the rampant sexism that you see in sports?

Last month during the Olympics it was especially noticeable. Interestingly, it was most noticeable to me during the volleyball games. Especially beach volleyball. Now beach volleyball is rather infamous for bikinis, bare chests, beer and boisterous crowds and music. Interestingly, the men in the Olympic competition wore shirts. I have not been able to find out why, perhaps some of our listeners know, and will be able to let us know through the comments at the WD site. But, the women wore the same skimpy bikinis that are the norm on the professional circuit. (more…)
